T-Mobile has replied to accusations that it was limiting Apple's iCloud Private Relay service by stating it was a setting problem, not a policy change.

Reports surfaced Monday that certain T-Mobile customers were receiving an error message claiming that their cellular plan would not allow Apple's privacy feature, Private Relay. In an email to AppleInsider on Tuesday, the carrier attempted to clear the air by stating that it didn't turn it off on purpose for any of its customers.

To our knowledge, several device settings in iOS 15.2 default to a functionality being disabled, according to the statement. Apple has been informed of this.

The statement concludes that this is not a T-Mobile-specific issue and notes that iCloud Phone Relay has not been prohibited globally.

After U.K. carriers including T-Mobile, Vodafone, Telefonica, and others published a letter saying that Private Relay compromises digital sovereignty and hinders their capacity to operate networks, the message spread on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. These capabilities, according to the organization, may prevent other networks and servers, particularly those in charge of connection, from accessing critical network data and information.

As a result of this, a number of European carriers have also disabled Private Relay.
