App Annie, a market research firm, has released an overview of 2021 trends following its previous report that app usage and spending rose during the coronavirus pandemic.
A few distinctions are made between Apple and Android users in the full report. In contrast, 77% of all app releases will be on Google Play in 2021.
According to this estimate, there were 2 million new apps released in 2021. Over 21 million apps and games have reportedly been released on Apple's App Store and Google Play.
There are 1.8 million iOS and 3.6 million Android apps still available for download. These apps generated more than $100 million each in 2021, and 13 of them earned more than $1 billion.
App Annie doesn't specify which of these apps it's referring to, but it does point out that consumer spending on popular games like Roblox and Genshin Impact increased this year. According to the report, mobile games are now able to provide graphics and gameplay experiences that rival those found on consoles.
Bridge Race and Hair Challenge, two of the company's so-called hypercasual games, did particularly well. As a result of the upcoming releases of Harry Potter: Magic Awakened and League of Legends: Wild Rift in H2 2021, China's gaming scene has experienced a resurgence in excitement.
What is the overall use of mobile devices and apps?
Approximately one-third of a user's waking hours are spent on their mobile device, according to App Annie. The United States ranked 10th in the world for the amount of time spent sleeping, with an average of 4.1 or 4.2 hours per day, depending on the report.
Brazilians and Indonesians spent the most time on their devices each day, with an average of 5.4 hours per day. Canada and Mexico both had 4.4 hours. China's smartphone users spent just 3.2 hours a day on their devices, compared to Russia's reported 4 hours.
As a result, in 2021, there will be 3.8 trillion hours of smartphone use worldwide.
Spending and downloads
More than 230 billion apps will be downloaded in the year 2021. That equated to an estimated $170 billion in sales by consumers.
In the United States, consumer spending on apps is expected to rise by 30% in 2021 over the previous year. For the year, $43 billion was spent, an increase of $10.4 billion from 2020.
Mobile gaming and in-app subscriptions are becoming more mainstream, according to App Annie.

Additionally, a list of the most popular iOS App Store keywords for 2021 was compiled by App Annie researchers. However, neither the combined nor sole Google Play figures are reported, nor does it indicate how frequently any of these terms were searched.
There are also 11 separate reports instead of a single overall summary, so it's impossible to tell which term was the most popular.
Zoom, on the other hand, was the most popular search term in the US business sector. Countries such as the United Kingdom and Indonesia were among those that experienced the same trend.

- ESPN is a popular television network dedicated to sports.
- Uber for Transportation and Directions
was the most frequently searched-for business term in Australia.
The future of social media
TikTok was the most popular of the top five social media apps in terms of the number of users who engaged with the app each month. For years, the video service has been under threat of closure in the United States.
According to the report, which follows a record-setting 2020, TikTok has seen the greatest depth of engagement and had an exceptional year in 2021.
